Ellipse
Ellipse is a permanent hair reduction system. It is great for reducing
unwanted or unsightly hair growth and makes difficult or problem hair
growth more manageable.
The hair must be dark in colour to be removed effectively, the darker
and thicker the hair and the lighter the skin the better results you
will have. However it is possible to treat finer hairs and darker skins
and still achieve good results.
How it works
To achieve long lasting or permanent hair removal, it is necessary to
destroy the hair follicle from which individual hairs grow. Well
controlled pulses of light penetrate the upper skin layer and are
absorbed by one of the body's own natural chemicals - melanin - in the
hair contained in the follicle.
Melanin converts the light energy into heat. This heat is transferred
to the hair follicle, which is destroyed, making it unable to produce a
new hair. The treatment is only effective on growing hairs as these are
still attached to the follicle. The majority of our hair is in the
resting phase which explains why more than one treatment is necessary.
We recommend that you book in for a consultation where you will receive
a full explanation about the treatment and our specialist Ellipse
therapist will give you an honest opinion on whether she thinks it is
possible to achieve the results you are looking for. You will also need
to have a patch test before proceeding with any treatments.
Frequently asked Questions
What is melanin?
Melanin is pigment found in the hair and skin. Melanin is the dark pigment and pheopmelanin is the light pigment.
How many treatments will I need for permanent hair removal?
No one can guarantee permanent removal of all hairs. It is possible to
remove the hairs, but not the reason that hairs grow. It is better to
think of hair reduction (hair management) than hair removal. Only hairs
in the growing phase can be treated, successfully with Ellipse. The
length and timing of the growth cycles are affected by numerous factors
such as body site, hair density, thickness, ethnic origin, hormonal
level and age. Usually 6-12 treatments are needed and the intervals
between treatments are typically 4-8 weeks.
Does it work on blonde hair?
Ellipse light and other IPL’S and lasers look for pigmentation to
destroy, therefore if you have blonde or red hair (pheomelanin) it
cannot be detected and unfortunately you will get no reduction
whatsoever.
Are there any side effects, Can it cause me any harm?
There are no long term side effects. Laser and light have been used for
many years in medicine to treat various conditions; hair removal with
light is just a newer way of using it.
Can I go on holiday in between treatment sessions?
It is recommended that you don’t, there has to be no
‘active melanin’ in the skin, which means any tan that you
have must be at least 30 days old otherwise there’s a chance of
burning the skin as the light will see the melanin in your skin before
it reaches your hair. When the melanin in your skin is NOT active the
light is drawn to your hair first because the pigment is darker.
Will the hair come back in between treatments?
Yes, we recommend a course of 6- 12 treatments. The hair will grow back
in between these treatments but will reduce with each one. You should
expect to have hair left but it will be softer, finer and less dense
than before. You maybe lucky and get almost complete removal.
What can I do in between treatments to remove the hair?
You are only able to shave in between treatments, No plucking, threading, waxing or depilatory creams.
Can I use self tan?
No, not on the area that you are having the Ellipse treatment. The
light cannot differentiate between fake pigment and real pigment.
Can you guarantee permanent hair removal?
No, unfortunately not, due to the results varying from person to person
and the most influencing factor are your hormones which are mainly the
cause of unwanted hair growth. We cannot control this, so that’s
why we cannot guarantee your results.
How often should I come for a treatment?
You will need to come every 4-8 weeks, because the hair growth has a
cycle of 3 stages and we need to make sure it’s in the first
stage, which is the growing stage for the treatment to be effective.
My skin is quite dark naturally; can I still have the treatment?
You can have this treatment with darker skin other than darker black
skins as it will burn. The greater the contrast between the hair and
skin colour the better the results.
It is best that you come in for a consultation, so that we can analyse your skin and hair type.
Can I have the treatment if I am pregnant or undergoing IVF?
No, your hormones will change enormously at this time and it is best to
wait until everything has regulated and then you can begin the Ellipse
treatment.
I have polycystic ovaries (PCOS), is this treatment suitable for me?
Probably not, as your hair growth is most likely due to the fact that
you have polycystic ovaries (PCOS) and we are not treating the cause
but the effect. Ellipse treatments may be able to make it much easier
to manage your hair growth but this may be costly as you will probably
need many more treatments than most people without the condition, even
to achieve the smallest results.
We would recommend a visit to your doctor to ask about IPL with PCOS
and you are welcome to come in to the salon for a consultation.
My daughter is 13 years old, and is very self-conscious of her hair; can she start the Ellipse treatment?
No, she will need to wait unfortunately until she is 18 years old.
There is far too much hormone activity, so she will need to wait until
they have settled down before beginning the Ellipse treatment. Talk to
your beauty therapist for alternative treatments until then.
Can men have the Ellipse treatment?
Men can have the treatment, but the results may not as good as a
women’s. Men have a much higher level of the male hormone -
testosterone, so will need more treatments as it will be always
fighting the testosterone.
